How to Prepare for Surgery at Midwest Medical Center

Thank you for choosing Midwest Medical Center.  We adhere to a high-standard of care, putting patient safety and satisfaction first.

Prior to the patient’s scheduled surgery date, they will meet with their surgeon to review the surgical procedure and important details including the benefits and risks.  We encourage patients to take this time to make sure all of their questions are answered.  Many find it helpful when they are accompanied by a close friend or family member to this appointment.

At this time, the surgeon will also ask about your medical history and perform a physical examination.  Also, the patient will be asked to complete necessary paperwork so that pre-admitting detail is taken care of prior to arrival for surgery.  In some cases, the patient may be contacted at home just prior to their surgery for additional information. After the consultation and exam, the patient will be given instructions on the preparation for surgery.   They may need to complete some lab work, have an x-ray, follow a special diet, shower with a special soap, etc.  Your surgical coordinator will provide you with precise detail on what time to arrive at the hospital on the day of surgery.

Day of your Surgical Procedure

Wrap Around Gown

Upon arrival for surgery, the patient will check-in with the front registration desk and finalize any remaining registration paperwork.  Once complete, the patient will be escorted back to the Staging Area in the Surgery Department.  Family/significant others can accompany them at this time.
In the Staging Area, the patient will be asked to sign an informed consent for surgery and then final preparation will begin. Patients are given a special warm, wrap-around gown and booties.  Depending on the type of procedure, the nurse may need to shave hair from an area or order additional lab work.  The patient’s vital signs will be taken and a nurse will start an IV (Intravenous Therapy administering liquid substances directly into a vein).

At this time, the anesthesia provider will meet with the patient and discuss the anesthesia procedures.  It is very important to discuss any past reaction to anesthetics or concerns you have at this time. Next, the surgeon will again meet with the patient and may mark the area where the surgery is to be performed.  The patient may be asked to empty their bladder, remove any dentures/ partials, jewelry, and contact lenses/ glasses.  The patient will be taken to the Surgical Suite and their family will be asked to wait in atrium area.

To provide for the patient’s safety, they patient may be asked to give their name and date of birth several times.   Before entering the Surgical Suite, the patient will be asked to verify their name and date of birth, verify the procedure they are having and which side, left or right, as applicable.

After the Surgical Procedure

After surgery, the surgeon will meet with the family (if authorized by the patient) and discuss the outcomes.  The patient will be transferred to the Post Anesthesia Recovery Unit.  In this unit, a recovery nurse will attend to the patient’s needs and administer medication as ordered by the surgeon for pain.  Once fully awake and recovered from surgery, the patient will be transferred back to the Staging Area, reunited with their family and discharged home or admitted to the in-patient floor as applicable.  If discharged home, the patient will receive instructions on proper diet, activity, pain control, dressing care, when to follow-up with their doctor, and information on possible side effects.
